The CSO Program is a student sector of the University of California Police Department, Riverside. Students are employed as CSOs, or Community Service Officers, to work in cooperation with the police officers, providing security and services for the University community.
CSO Officers must be either undergraduate or graduate students
attending UCR. It does not matter what year you are, in fact we
encourage freshmen to apply because we like to keep our students
employed with us as long as possible. |
We currently have several students who have been working with our department for their entire undergraduate career at UCR, and are planning on staying with us while they continue their education in UCR's graduate schools.
CSO Officers are part of a very tight knit team of individuals. We
work close with the police officers and dispatchers of the
UC Police Department. We also work with the police officers who work for
the University Neighborhood Enhancement Team (which is a combination
project of UCR Police and Riverside Police Officers). Team-work is a
highly valued skill in our program, and applicants must be willing to
work with people from all different walks of life, with many different
interests.
Some of the duties that CSOs have are as follows: We have mostly night
shifts from the hour of 10pm to 4am. Our program runs 365 days a year
including all weekends and all holidays. However, it is not required that a CSO work every weekend or every holiday.
In fact, our work schedule is extremely flexible, which makes us a highly valued employment opportunity on campus. We have two day shifts available during the week, but even they start in the late afternoon and end in
evening. On weekends you can find CSOs working in shifts almost 24 hours a day from Friday night to Monday morning. CSOs have the responsibility of patrolling the UCR campus including, but not limited
to, the dormitories, campus apartments, campus buildings, parking lots etc.

CSOs perform building checks after hours and report suspicious activity to the police dispatchers. CSOs do not get directly involved with any activity we call out for the police officers. We act solely as the "eyes and ears" for the UCPD. We are trained on proper police codes and procedures to use when we are out on duty. CSOs also perform public services to students, staff, and faculty who might request them.
|
On weekends we open and close doors for classes, special meetings, or tests. In addition to our normal shifts, CSOs are sometimes asked to participate in special assignments such as security for graduation ceremonies, or security for when the Governor of California came to speak on our campus, or any unpredictable situations that might occur.
On any given night (weekends and holidays included), CSOs can be found patrolling the Dormitories, Campus Apartments, Canyon Crest Family Housing, and the interior UCR campus. In addition to the normal shifts, we have Special Assignments from time to time. As well as regular patrolling, CSOs provide Public Services such as night escorts and locking buildings.
